Conventional Media Decline, By the Numbers

Sourced 2026 figures on social news, YouTube's share of TV, newspaper ad revenue, trust, podcasts, and digital ads.

This is the companion to Conventional Media Is Dead. Social Is the New Media.. That piece makes the case. This one lines up the figures behind it, each one linked to the source.

Where Americans get news

In the 2026 Digital News Report, 56% of U.S. respondents use social media for news, well ahead of TV and news websites, both at 45% (Reuters Institute).

The same report, looking across countries, found that 77% of people globally watch online news video each week, and that this viewing is ahead of broadcast TV news in 45 of 48 markets (Reuters Institute).

YouTube on the television

Nielsen's July 2026 Gauge, the interval from June 29 to July 26, put YouTube at a record 14.2% of TV usage, a 5.0-point lead over the next media company. Streaming overall was 49.0% of TV time. Broadcast was 19.5%. Cable was 18.7% (Nielsen).

Edison Research's Infinite Dial 2026, a survey of Americans 12 and older, found that 84% use YouTube monthly and 78% use it weekly (Edison Research).

Pay TV subscriptions

MoffettNathanson, as reported by Light Reading, found that traditional pay TV lost 953,000 subscribers in the second quarter of 2026, down 9.2% from a year earlier. The broader total, which also counts virtual pay TV services along with cable, satellite, and phone-company TV, ended the quarter at 61.51 million (Light Reading).

Newspapers

Pew Research puts U.S. newspaper advertising revenue at $49.435 billion in 2005 and an estimated $9.8 billion in 2022. Weekday circulation was 63,340,000 in 1984 and 20,943,023 in 2022, a print-and-digital estimate (Pew Research Center).

Northwestern's Medill State of Local News report found that newspapers have lost more than three-quarters of their jobs since 2005, and that jobs fell another 7% in the past year. The report counted 136 closures, more than two a week. Web traffic to 100 of the largest newspapers was down more than 45% over four years. About 50 million Americans now have limited or no access to local news (Medill, Northwestern University).

Trust

Gallup's September 2026 survey found that 33% of Americans have a great deal or a fair amount of trust in mass media, up from 28% in 2025, and far from 72% in 1976. Another 33% said they have none at all (Gallup).

Podcasts

The same Edison survey found a large podcast audience. 58% of Americans 12 and older, about 167 million people, listen monthly. 45% listen weekly. 57% have both listened to and watched a podcast (Edison Research).

Where the advertising money went

The IAB's 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report put U.S. digital ad revenue at $294.6 billion. Social media advertising was $117.7 billion, up 32.6% from the year before, a gain of $29 billion. Creator ad spend was $37 billion in 2025, with $44 billion projected for 2026 (IAB).

For scale: social media's one-year gain of $29 billion is roughly three times what Pew estimated the entire U.S. newspaper industry earned from advertising in 2022.

What this means

The audience did not vanish. It moved to phones, to social feeds, to YouTube, and to podcasts, and the advertising money moved with it. Television and newspapers are still there. They are no longer the main way most people find out what is happening, and they are a much smaller business than they were.

Trust in the mass media that remains is low. A story in someone else's outlet can still help. It is a weak plan if it is the only plan. The practical response is media you own: a steady stream of video and conversation that your customers can find without waiting on a newsroom that has fewer people than it used to.

Start with one recording day

Our One Day Shoot is one full day of filming, with a coach on set, cut into about 30 short clips. If a longer conversation fits the business better, the podcast team handles the filming and editing. Optimal Reach Media is a Pittsburgh production studio that comes to you.
